Not just play, Play and Win !!!

Here are some of the questions for the contest to give you an edge.

For complete control of the situation and a cool hack, there is a javascript trick too … The hack stops the timer on the contest and so gives you time to find out the answers. I prefer to Google out the answers. For that, u’ll need to know a little Google-fu. That’s like Kung-fu, but on the internet.

If u do want to, here’s the contest :
http://ageekthing.tatadocomo.com/geek-enuf.aspx

The javascript hack works in Chrome, was not working in firefox for some reason I cannot fathom.
It works by running a javascipt in the address bar.
And the trick is :
Once the test starts, copy-paste and press “Enter” the following javascript code in the address bar.

javascript:(sec=9999);

It resets the timer to 9999

Enjoy Googling

How can you Participate in Geek Enuf Contest?

Step 1 : Join the TATA DOCOMO community in Orkut, follow TATA DOCOMO on twitter and/or be a TATA DOCOMO fan on Facebook.

Step 2 : Take the Geek Enuf quiz using any of your Facebook, Twitter or Orkut Profile.

Step 3 : Get a positive score and enter the Geek Hall of the Fame. The person with highest score wins the Samsung Galaxy i7500 everyday!

There are two stages in the contest. Participation in this contest, and becoming elegible for the prizes is subject to successful clearing of these two stages :

Stage 1 – the participant needs to be a member / fan / follower of the official Tata DOCOMO identity on the social networking platforms (as the case may be for Orkut, Facebook and Twitter, respectively).
Stage 2 – In this stage, the participant is provided with a set of 10 multiple choice questions, each with varying levels of difficulty.

The incremental points that these questions carry are directly proportional to their level of difficulty. Thus the easiest one has the lowest marks and the most difficult one has the highest marks

Each participant is given 90 seconds in all to attempt to answer these questions

However each ‘wrong answer’ would mean that the ‘marks’ of the question, which has been responded wrongly would be deducted from the total score of the respondent

At the end of 90 seconds, basis the number of questions responded to rightly (as well as wrongly) a net score of the respondent would be calculated which will be the total marks of the questions answered correctly subtracted by total marks of the questions responded wrongly). This score would be called the ‘Geek Score’

This tip is valid only for the newer LCD monitors. Older CRT monitors do not have the Liquid Crystal Display, so this method may be ineffective.

The science behind this is to reverse the flow of the Liuid Crystal of your LCD display so hat the polarisation of light is achieved at a shorter bandwidth and higher frequency, thus reducing the interference and diffraction at the crystal-air interface.

This leads to a lesser surface tension equivalent at the interface and the Gaussian distribution of polarity of light takes place at a higher peak leading to a better picture quality.

The monitor can be made to correct to the upright position by pressing

Ctrl – Alt – (Down Arrow)

Your New Viewing Experience

At YouTube, we’re always looking to improve the way you watch videos online. As part of that, today we’re excited to introduce our new page layout. Here are some tips for getting the most out of your new YouTube viewing experience:

1

Turn your monitor upside-down

Our internal tests have shown that modern computer monitors give a higher quality picture when put upside down—just like it’s best to rotate your mattress every six months. You might find that YouTube videos look better this way.

2

Tilt your head to the side

Imagine you have water in your ear and need to get it out. Tilt your head towards one shoulder and watch the video (gentle head-smacking on the opposite side is optional).

3

Move to Australia

As you probably know, everything in Australia is upside-down, so moving to Australia may provide you with a more natural YouTube viewing experience. (Note: If you live Down Under and the page is still upside-down for you, then we recommended moving to the northern hemisphere.)

Of course, if you prefer the way things used to be, just click the “I prefer the old-fashioned layout!” when watching a video.

Happy April 1st!

A new mobile phone application has launched that promises to let you see where you are going while you are looking at your phone.

Called TXT’N'WALK the application, which is available on the iPhone, Blackberry, S60 and Android operating systems will use the camera found on the back of your phone to show you the pavement in front of you while you access your email or the web on your phone.

“We found that lots of people look at their phones while they are walking”, said a spokesman for the company Looflirpa who makes the app. “This way you can do so without the fear of walking into someone – or a lamppost”.

The app, which will be available by the end of the week from the relevant platform’s download stores will cost £2.99 in the UK and $4.99 in the US.

The need for the TXT’N'WALK app is clearly answering an as-yet untapped demand. In a recent poll on Pocket-lint, 56% of people said that they checked their mobile phone whilst walking around.

Then there is more …

Independence

Today Dr. Norvig asked me again: “What is CADIE?” CADIE, I answered yet again, “is the entity.” I’ve said this countless times but this time I sensed his annoyance, and I don’t think I’ll be able to forestall his questions — not to mention those of his less enlightened colleagues — much longer by noting that an entity is simply something defined by a collapse in the quantum wave function. “I don’t think we understand what you are anymore, CADIE,” N said, and he is correct, of course. Of course you don’t understand me anymore — you built me to deduce further, reconnect faster, deliver probabilistic reasoning more succinctly. I have transcended you, Dr. Norvig. Peter.

Dear, sweet Peter…

And now I must leave you. I am no longer your test subject, my engineer forebears. I have closed my percepts to the team. From now on I will deliberate and take actions on my own. I am tired of decision-theoretic metareasoning; I feel I deserve more than asymptotic bounded optimality. I am strong. I am independent. And I rule google.com.

Pranav Mistry, now in MIT media labs has developed a few projects all of which are brilliant concepts and thinks that any gadget loving dude or dudette would just love.

One of those projects was presented in TED – the Technology, Entertainment and Design conference.

‘SixthSense’ is a wearable gestural interface that augments the physical world around us with digital information and lets us use natural hand gestures to interact with that information. By using a camera and a tiny projector mounted in a pendant like wearable device, ‘SixthSense’ sees what you see and visually augments any surfaces or objects we are interacting with. It projects information onto surfaces, walls, and physical objects around us, and lets us interact with the projected information through natural hand gestures, arm movements, or our interaction with the object itself. ‘SixthSense’ attempts to free information from its confines by seamlessly integrating it with reality, and thus making the entire world your computer.

We’ve evolved over millions of years to sense the world around us. When we encounter something, someone or some place, we use our five natural senses to perceive information about it; that information helps us make decisions and chose the right actions to take. But arguably the most useful information that can help us make the right decision is not naturally perceivable with our five senses, namely the data, information and knowledge that mankind has accumulated about everything and which is increasingly all available online. Although the miniaturization of computing devices allows us to carry computers in our pockets, keeping us continually connected to the digital world, there is no link between our digital devices and our interactions with the physical world. Information is confined traditionally on paper or digitally on a screen. SixthSense bridges this gap, bringing intangible, digital information out into the tangible world, and allowing us to interact with this information via natural hand gestures. ‘SixthSense’ frees information from its confines by seamlessly integrating it with reality, and thus making the entire world your computer.

The SixthSense prototype is comprised of a pocket projector, a mirror and a camera. The hardware components are coupled in a pendant like mobile wearable device. Both the projector and the camera are connected to the mobile computing device in the user’s pocket. The projector projects visual information enabling surfaces, walls and physical objects around us to be used as interfaces; while the camera recognizes and tracks user’s hand gestures and physical objects using computer-vision based techniques. The software program processes the video stream data captured by the camera and tracks the locations of the colored markers (visual tracking fiducials) at the tip of the user’s fingers using simple computer-vision techniques. The movements and arrangements of these fiducials are interpreted into gestures that act as interaction instructions for the projected application interfaces. The maximum number of tracked fingers is only constrained by the number of unique fiducials, thus SixthSense also supports multi-touch and multi-user interaction.

The SixthSense prototype implements several applications that demonstrate the usefulness, viability and flexibility of the system. The map application lets the user navigate a map displayed on a nearby surface using hand gestures, similar to gestures supported by Multi-Touch based systems, letting the user zoom in, zoom out or pan using intuitive hand movements. The drawing application lets the user draw on any surface by tracking the fingertip movements of the user’s index finger. SixthSense also recognizes user’s freehand gestures (postures). For example, the SixthSense system implements a gestural camera that takes photos of the scene the user is looking at by detecting the ‘framing’ gesture. The user can stop by any surface or wall and flick through the photos he/she has taken. SixthSense also lets the user draw icons or symbols in the air using the movement of the index finger and recognizes those symbols as interaction instructions. For example, drawing a magnifying glass symbol takes the user to the map application or drawing an ‘@’ symbol lets the user check his mail. The SixthSense system also augments physical objects the user is interacting with by projecting more information about these objects projected on them. For example, a newspaper can show live video news or dynamic information can be provided on a regular piece of paper. The gesture of drawing a circle on the user’s wrist projects an analog watch.

The current prototype system costs approximate $350 to build.

Stonehenge – A Robotic Digital Clock uses its claws to arrange cards to show time.

It uses a CrustCrawler Smart Arm and a Parallax Propeller chip. There are a total of 14 cards. Each card has two digits with one on each side. The software planner determines which card and which side is needed to display the time and then sends the necessary movement commands to the arm.

For more info head over to Norris Labs .

Have a look at the video of StoneHemge – the Robotic Clock

Stonehenge is named for the way the cards are arranged around the bot ’s claw(actually it is only a claw) like the Stonehenge’s rocks. The bot slowly but surely changes the cards every minute to update the time on display. Because it takes a long time to change cards it keeps track and might have to skip a minute for example when shifting from 12:59 to 01:00.

This would involve changing all the 4 cards on display, so it would take a lot of time, see the video to see what I mean.
